The
eight Trigrams hold the key to all knowledge, and represent the subdevisions
of creation. The sequence they are arranged in is of importance. The first
trigram is ch'ien, which is the creative principle and seen as heaven
and is represented by three straight yang lines. Opposite at 6 o'clock
is k'un seen as earth and consists of three broken lines. The other divisions
are Lake, fire, Thunder, Wind, Water and Mountain. The arrangment of the
eight trigrams dates back to 1150 b.c and where used for divination (predicting
the future). In the centre are the interlocking Yin and Yang
symbols the opposite, but complimentary principles of the universe and
a fundemetal teaching of the Toaist. |
